What does it mean to be a Seren Academy learner?

Being a Seren learner means that you are a high achieving learner dedicated to achieving your highest potential for your future education and career by upholding high standards of commitment to the programme and your education journey. As a Seren learner you are committed to:

  • Attending events you register for
  • Being positive ambassadors for your school or college and the Seren programme during your time in the programme and beyond
  • Showing diligence and hard work in your studies and super-curriculars
  • Expressing intellectual curiosity and a passion for your academic pursuits

What can the Seren Academy offer you?

By participating in the Seren Academy programme you will gain access to a range of opportunities that will support you to achieve your highest potential. These opportunities include:

  • Access to fully funded residentials that are only available to Seren learners
  • Information, advice and guidance on applying to leading universities in Wales, the UK and overseas
  • Opportunities to participate in academic masterclasses, research projects and academic competitions
  • Mentoring to help you get into your dream university and course
  • Presentations on higher education pathways you might have never considered

How can you make the most of being a Seren learner?

There are many ways of maximising your potential through participating in the Seren Academy programme. Seren is what you make of it so make sure you take advantage of all that is available to you so that you can grow as much as possible from your participation in the Seren programme.

Make the most of the Seren Academy by:

  • Signing up to Seren Space and keeping up to date with new events and opportunities you can participate in
  • Checking your email regularly for updates from the Seren Academy
  • Attending events in your hub and looking out for information from your Hub Coordinator
  • Committing to attending any events that you sign up to
  • Applying to residentials, mentoring opportunities and university preparation programmes offered exclusively by the Seren Academy
  • Exploring new opportunities even if you haven’t considered them before – they might help you make informed decisions about your future
  • Keeping in touch with Seren through Seren Space once you have started your higher education journey, looking out for opportunities to support the programme and its future cohorts of learners

How will being part of the Seren Academy help you in the future?

You will always be a part of the Seren Academy even after you settle at university or into the working world. You are part of a network of bright Welsh minds – and this network will help you along your lifelong journey by:

  • Increasing your higher education prospects
  • Enabling you to make connections with like-minded people you can meet at university
  • Exposing you to excellent career opportunities
  • Giving you the opportunity to inspire and give back to young Welsh learners

How should you use Seren Space?

To ensure that Seren Space is a useful, welcoming and productive space for all Seren Academy learners, teachers and hub leads, you should consider the following guidance carefully. By agreeing to this code of conduct you understand that as a Seren Space user you should:

  • Give accurate information about yourself and not provide the Seren Academy with false information
  • Give accurate details about your school, year group and hub
  • Agree that Seren can change your hub name on Seren Space without notifying you if your school does not appear to be matched with the correct hub
  • Not upload a profile picture
  • Not use any inappropriate language in any communications
  • Not impersonate any other individuals on the platform
  • Not to share access to Seren Academy opportunities with individuals who are not a part of the programme

What is expected of your conduct during the Seren Academy programme?

When you are participating in any Seren Academy activities on Seren Space, during a virtual or an in-person event, you are expected to:

  • Be respectful towards all Seren Academy learners, hub leads and staff
  • Maintain a behaviour and environment that allows all learners to get the most from any activity within the programme
  • Complete any applications or set tasks by the given deadline
  • Report any bullying, safeguarding concerns or misconduct to Seren Academy staff

Data Sharing – online and in-person activities

Welsh Government will be the data controller for this information. Cazbah (data processor) is the appointed contractor for the Seren Academy programme and is working in partnership with all Seren Academy hub co-ordinators, leading universities in Wales, the UK and overseas and with third party contractors and academic specialists to make arrangements for Seren Academy learners to attend Seren Academy activities (online and in-person).

If you attend events, Cazbah will carry out their function as the data processor and will need to process some personal information about you in order to make the necessary registration and attendance access for you to take part in online/in-person activities together with the monitoring of your progress on the Seren Academy programme.

Your data may be shared with key Seren Academy partners. Each of the partners have agreed to follow the same data processes as outlined with data sharing agreements in place which are reviewed every 12 months.

What will we do with your personal information?

Your personal information will be used for Seren Academy activity applications and evaluation purposes for the programme. If at any point you wish for us to stop sharing this information, please contact us at seren@gov.wales

How secure is your personal data?

All partners and contractors will securely transfer your personal information using accredited and agreed data transfer facilities.

Where is your data stored?

Your personal data will be kept securely within approved information systems.

How long do we keep your personal data?

Outside of Seren Space, all data related to an online or in-person activity will be deleted after the event and evaluation period has been completed.

Individual rights Under GDPR

You have the following rights in relation to the personal information you provide as part of this project:

  • Access a copy of your own data
  • Require us to rectify inaccuracies in that data
  • To object to or restrict processing (in certain circumstances)
  • For your data to be ‘erased’ (in certain circumstances) and
  • To lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) who is our independent regulator for data protection
